TRADITION WITH VISION

The Arthurhaus looks back on a long history – characterized by hard work, genuine hospitality and a deep connection to Alpine nature. What once began as a simple supply point for mountain farmers and hikers is now a unique place where past and present are charmingly combined. You can still feel its roots today: in the way it is built, in the way people treat each other – and in the love of life in the mountains.

The beginnings

A house in the heart of the mountains

What is now a popular retreat for nature lovers, hikers and animal lovers once began very simply – as a simple alpine station at the foot of the Hochkönig. The Arthurhaus was built at a time when life in the mountains was characterized by hard work, dependence on the weather and a deep respect for nature.

With the purchase of the “Mitterberg Alpe” by the Kupfergewerkschaft, the construction of a restaurant began. A brick building was erected in place of the old Mitterberg Alps hut, consisting of a kitchen and a guest room on the ground floor and two guest rooms on the second floor. The restaurant was given the name “Alpenwirtschaft Mitterberg” and was primarily intended as a bar for the many miners working on the Mitterberg. This old building is still integrated into the Arthurhaus building today, which has grown to its present size after many conversions and extensions.

From 1894, Therese Haggenmüller, born in 1866 in Jochberg in Tyrol, leased the Mitterberg alpine farm and in 1895 married Peter Radacher I (born 1867) from Radochsberg in Rußbach near Abtenau. The marriage produced three children: Peter in 1896, Josel in 1898 and Therese in 1900. From 1894, the alpine farm was also a mountain guide and porter station for conquering the Hochkönig.

In 1921, the inn was rebuilt again on behalf of the then main shareholder of Mitterberger-Kupfer-Aktiengesellschaft, the Berndorf industrialist Arthur Krupp. The old name Alpenwirtschaft Mitterberg was renamed Arthurhaus in honor of Arthur Krupp.

Change

From a refuge to a genuine mountain hotel

Over the years, not only did the number of guests grow – the Arthurhaus itself also continued to develop. Step by step, the once simple hostel became a mountain hotel with character: down-to-earth, warm and deeply connected to the region.

While tourism was changing all around, the Arthurhaus remained true to its roots – and still focused on careful expansion and contemporary comfort. New rooms, cozy lounges and a culinary offering that reflects the taste of the region were created.

With a great deal of personal commitment from the host family and a keen sense of the charm of the place, the Arthurhaus has not simply grown – it has grown. Every conversion, every extension was done with care: wood remained wood, the view of the Hochkönig remained unobstructed – and the feeling of arriving and being at home remained.
