Hiking,
panoramic views
& the scent of alpine pastures.

FROM EASY ALPINE PATHS TO PANORAMIC SUMMIT TOURS

Your hikes start from the Arthurhaus in the middle of the Mitterberg Alpine pasture area. Whether leisurely or sporty, short or extended – panoramic views, rustic huts and real moments in nature await you here. Just set off and let the mountains work their magic.

Hiking

at the foot of the Hochkönig

Around 140 km of marked hiking trails lead directly from the Arthurhaus out into the impressive nature reserve of the northern Kalkhochalpen. From leisurely walks across blooming alpine meadows to challenging tours on rock and ice – everyone will find the right trail here.

Nestled between the Hochkönig and Hochkeil, the Berghotel Arthurhaus is located at 1,500 m above sea level – right in the middle of the hiking area. No transfer necessary, no car – just set off on a hike, directly from the hotel.

The summit

The peak of emotions

The Arthurhaus in Mühlbach am Hochkönig is a popular stopover for numerous long-distance hiking trails: the Salzburger Almenweg, the Arno Trail and the Via Alpina use the Arthurhaus as a cozy stopover.

Our three themed hiking trails “Mitterberger Erzweg”, the “Murmeltierweg” and the “Ameisenweg” provide all sorts of interesting and curious facts.

The royal tour of every hiking week leads from the Arthurhaus via the Mitterfeldalm to the Matrashaus at the summit of the Hochkönig at 2,943 m.

Hiking trails

Circular hiking trails at the Arthurhaus

Six varied circular hiking trails lead you directly from the Arthurhaus to the most beautiful places around the Hochkönig: along the Mandlwand Promenade, into the enchanted Riedingtal with its waterfalls or up to the Widdersberg, where the panorama of the “Four Huts” awaits you.

And best of all: hiking at 1,500 m above sea level is not only good for the soul – circulation, breathing and well-being also demonstrably benefit from exercise in this clear mountain air.
Hiking up here is more than just getting around – it’s pure mountain power.

Marmot

The marmot trail

The leisurely marmot trail starts directly behind the Schweizerhütte Alpine dairy at the signposted board. On an easily accessible, flat gravel path, you hike around 1 km into the idyllic Kreuzbergmahd – right into the “realm of the lazybones of the Hochkönig“.

With a little patience and luck, you can watch the marmots in the wild as they sunbathe, whistle or disappear into their burrow at lightning speed. Two wooden benches along the path invite you to pause and enjoy.

After about 15 minutes on the way back, another highlight awaits: in the marmot enclosure at the Arthurhaus, you can experience the tame animals up close – and even feed them fresh carrots.

Erzweg

The peak of emotions

Embark on a fascinating journey through the history of copper mining around Mühlbach am Hochkönig. The copper trail takes you on a descent of around 5.5 km and 640 vertical meters from the mountain world of the Mitterberg back to the valley – accompanied by 15 excitingly designed information boards.

Along the way, you will discover prehistoric mining sites (Bingen), walk past tunnels from the modern mining era and cross the impressive Barbara Gorge. You reach the historic Viererwasch via the old Mitterbergstraße before returning to Mühlbach via the route of the former light railroad.

Allow around 2-3 hours for this impressive tour – and be amazed by the interplay of nature, technology and history along the way.
